It was about 8 pm on a Monday and although we were assured a rainless evening, it hadn't ceased raining! Ryan and I were resting there going over the weekend's golf results, at the ready for the sixth job of the day to arrive. Before long we had a call from a woman on a business trip who had pulled into the Esso filling station in Southend-on-Sea and put the wrong fuel in her diesel cyan Audi RS 6 lease car by mistake. The poor lady was fairly irritated apparently, saying "I simply can't believe I've messed up the car! I am so accustomed to filling my petrol vehicle I completely didn't remember that I was operating a diesel!" I told her to calm down and not to worry, and also that such things often happen. She was able to relocate the car to a protected spot and, as it was only a short distance off from where we were, we could reach the woman swiftly. The incorrect fuel was extracted so she was able to return to the Premier Inn she was residing in. Even though we got pretty soaked, it was all worthwhile to watch her drive off relaxed and less stressed. Another misfuel correction in Essex well done in my mind!

The 3 things you HAVE TO know about Wrong Fuel!

Motorboat Fuel Drains

If you find there is the wrong fuel, or even contaminated fuel (most commonly water contamination or degraded fuel) in a boat we can help you clean it out. As long as the boat is either on land, or parked near to a vehicle parking bay we are able to access the storage tanks and remove the contaminated fuel. We have performed quite a few fuel drains at docks and boatyards throughout the country.

AdBlue Contamination

Throughout Essex we are identifying a growing number of instances of AdBlue contamination wherein an individual has poured AdBlue right into their diesel tank. This is mainly as a result of people not being totally sure the right way to work with it (remember: it is not a fuel additive), and in part because the filler necks for diesel and AdBlue are normally right near to one another on the vehicle.

Now, precisely what is the problem with putting AdBlue in the diesel car?

Since AdBlue is predominantly deionised water, it is actually nearly as good as putting water into your tank. Diesel and water tend not to mix at all and attempting to run a diesel car on water cannot work. In addition to this, the urea is highly corrosive to the fuel system pipes and seals and is at risk of crystallisation, obstructing injectors and fuel filters. If perhaps you poured AdBlue into the fuel tank get it drained as soon as possible. And obviously be careful not to start the car - not even to maneuver it away from the pump. Assuming you did start the vehicle you may most likely have to have the full fuel system cleaned and filters changed out.

Whenever you discover yourself to be in this predicament don’t panic! Contact us, the UK’s Number 1 fuel contamination business. Our technicians have the practical expertise and working experience to get you back on your way rapidly and efficiently, without mess or hassle.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.

If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VAT receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
